SEVENTH DAY: DEPARTURE FROM MATERA
ARRIVAL DAISY OF SAVOY
MORNING: PATH IN SALINE GREATEST OF ITALY
In the beginning was the Salpi lake, a coastal basin formed by brackish waters and marshes that gave its name to the ancient Salapia, lagoon city Daunia. Already in medieval cartography, in the southern part of the lake, it shows the presence of the salt mines that ensured the valuable mineral from the early centuries d. C. Here the Emperor Frederick II, enchanted by the life of the marshes, he spent his days hunting with falcons, noting the first ornithological observations come down to us through the work “De arte venandi cum avibus”. At the turn of the 1900s he left off without completing the transformation of the basin, through reclamation works started by the Bourbons, thus making the wetland as we know it today: an expanse of water more or less brackish, of variable depth, interrupted by levees and islets outcropping covered with vegetation halophyte (resistant to salinity).
